Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Programs
The USDA Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program provides students with a fresh fruit or vegetable snack during the school day. The program helps increase the consumption of a wide variety of fresh fruits and vegetables, creates a healthier school environment and positively impacts family eating habits.
Nine Surry County Elementary Schools received a USDA Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program grant for the 2011-2012 school year. The grant is coordinated by Child Nutrition Services. A fresh fruit and vegetable snack is provided for students three days each week. Snacks will be eaten in the classroom and children are encouraged to try the snack each day. Elementary Schools participating in the 11-12 program are; Cedar Ridge, Copeland, Dobson, Flat Rock, Franklin, Mountain Park, Pilot Mountain, Rockford and White Plains.
