North Surry High School Band
The North Surry High School Band program consists of a variety of ensembles which include:
Marching band, Concert band, Jazz ensemble, small ensembles and Pep band.
The Marching band begins rehearsal in August and runs through early November. The marching band also creates, practices, and performs a 6-8 minute field show. This show is performed at home
football games and band competitions throughout the surrounding area.
The competitions from the 2014 season were located in Ashe, Patrick, and Rowan Counties. In 2014, the marching band had 75
members and competed in the AAA division finishing in first place with a rating of superior at the final competition of the season.
The Concert band presents three performances per academic year, a Christmas, MPA (MusicPerformance Adjudication) and a spring performance.
In the fall of 2014 and spring of 2016, the concert band performed a
small ensemble Scholarship Concert to raise money for private instruction. We closed the concert performing “Proudly We Hail” (by Brian Balmages) with the Appalachian State University Trumpet Choir.
Students had the opportunity to audition to participate in a Yadkin Valley Honor Band with clinician, Ed Kiefer. Seventeen North Surry students participated in the Yadkin Valley clinic, including
three students that received first chair in their respective sections.
In January, students are invited to
audition for the Northwest District All-District band encompassing nineteen counties in North Carolina. This year, three students earned the opportunity to participate in the clinic which is held in February. North Surry was fortunate to have one student achieve the highest score making him eligible to audition for the North Carolina All State band in March. A third clinic is offered in April and it is limited to high schools in only Surry County.
The Jazz ensemble rehearses after school and is invited to several gigs across the county each year. The Pep band performs at most home basketball games throughout the winter.
