The County of Surry will hold a kickoff celebration in recognition of the County’s 250th Anniversary on Saturday, May 2 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Historic Courthouse Square, 114 W. Atkins St. in Dobson. The event is called Surry 250. Citizens will enjoy food trucks, Surry County sonkers, children’s activities, historical and tradesmen booths from Wake Forest University and Horne Creek, Revolutionary War re-enactments and the following lineup of bluegrass, old time, country and jazz musicians: Nunn Brothers, Slate Mountain Ramblers, Melva Houston, Anna Mertson, Mickey Galyean and Cullen’s Bridge.
Surry County Schools is proud to offer a wide variety of summer intersession scholastic opportunities FREE of charge for Surry County School System students. IGNITE Adventures and Explorations offers camps for rising kindergartners through Grade 12. Additionally, Read to Achieve Summer Reading Camp offers extra reading support and opportunities for current grades 1-3 students if the student is not at grade level by the end of the school year. High school summer courses for credit are available face-to-face, online, or blended. Summer online classes are also available through Surry Virtual Academy.
All elementary schools in the Surry County School System are accepting kindergarten registration for children who are 5 years old on or before August 31, 2020. Surry County Schools was awarded a five-year School Climate Transformation Grant from the US Department of Education entitled Climate and Relationships that Encourage (CARE). Over the five-year period, we will collect annual school climate surveys from our staff, students, and you as parents or guardians. The survey is anonymous, and we appreciate your honest feedback about your perceptions about the climate at your child(ren)’s school.
