Literacy Coaching

  • The Literacy Coach leads Surry County Schools in efforts to increase literacy achievement for all student populations and support core reading instruction. The Literacy coach will provide training in fundamental reading instruction, analyze Reading 3D data for K-3 students, work collaboratively with classroom teachers concerning research based reading strategies, and support the First Steps Reading Program and other intervention programs in all school wide Title I schools.

    Some of the duties for the  Literacy Coach include guidance that will:

    • Create a county wide literacy environment conducive to effective literacy instruction
    • Facilitate instruction based on current reading research throughout the literacy program
    • Demonstrate model reading strategies in training and classrooms
    • Evaluate literacy needs based on Reading 3D and DIBELS data
    • Use assessment data to gain knowledge for placement of students in appropriate instructional and intervention programs
    • Work with teachers individually and in collaborative teams providing support on a full range of reading, writing, and communication strategies
    • Provide reading professional development for classroom teachers to improve literacy instruction
    • Encourage literacy and life-long learning
    • Serve to strengthen the literacy program throughout the district
