• Employees should use good judgment and this guide to determine their individual course of action.  Students and staff make up the Surry County Schools family.  The safety and well-being of our school system staff are equally as important to us as the safety and well-being of our students.  The superintendent will decide the students' schedule.  Each staff member must make his or her own responsible decision when weather conditions are hazardous.  Your principal, supervisor, or superintendent will work with you within these guidelines, but only you are in a position to balance your options with safety.

If no weather announcement is made, schools will open as usual.

    If school is delayed:

    • 2 hour delay - students and staff are expected to report to school two hours later than their "normal" report time.
    • 3 hour delay - students and staff are expected to report to school three hours later than their "normal" report time.  School Nutrition report as directed by supervisor.
    • The following announcement will be made:
      • "The Surry County Schools are on a two hour delay for students and staff" or "The Surry County Schools are on a three hour delay for students and staff."

      • Middle school        7:45 a.m.
      • High school           7:30 a.m.

    If school is dismissed early:

    • Teachers and other school-based employees may be dismissed at the discretion of the principal after all buses have left and all responsibilities have been satisfied.
    • Central Office personnel may be dismissed at the discretion of the superintendent or designee.

Delay and Early Release Days only apply to employees that work.  If an employee is absent due to a scheduled leave day, the employee must take leave for the entire workshop (certified 7.5 and classified 8.0).
