Sponsor: Lori CreedThe Golden Talon Chapter of the NEHS has participated in various literacy-based service projects in the past including serving as Reading Buddies to kindergarten students at Dobson Elementary, serving as guest speakers about high school to 5th grade students at Mountain Park Elementary, collecting books to be given out at Surry Central's Trunk-or-Treat, creating literacy-themed bulletin boards, volunteering with numerous groups for Read Across America, and celebrating poetry by passing out poems and candy on National Poem-in-your-Pocket Day. All members must earn 15 hours of literacy-based community service each year.Members are also encouraged to read the common reader (selected by NEHS each year) and apply for the NEHS common reader scholarship.To become a member of NEHS, students must have completed both English 1 and English 2, have a minimum English GPA of 3.63 and an overall GPA of 3.5.Members must also have a clean disciplinary record for high school (no ISS, OSS, or bus suspensions) and must maintain a clean disciplinary record in order to remain a member. Applications are accepted throughout the month of September each school year, and inductions occur in October each school year. Members are required to pay a one-time membership fee of $20.NEHS members in good standing wear navy and gold cords at graduation.
