5th Annual MAD Dash 5K and Fun Run
The 5th Annual MAD Dash 5K & Fun Run raised over $25,000 for Surry County Schools’ students and teachers. The race, held on April 29, 2017 and hosted by the Surry County Schools Educational Foundation, had over 600 participants racing through the streets of Dobson, NC, with hundreds more volunteers and spectators cheering them on! The 5K began on the Surry Community College campus and finished at the 50-yard line of the Surry Central High School Rex Mitchell Track and Field. Dozens of children participated in a Fun Run following the 5K.
Congratulations to the first place runner Tony Riggs (18:20), second place Carson Draughn (19:03) and third place Justin Atkins (19:20), as well as the top three female runners Ashley Sumner (21:18), Kirsten Martin (21:41) and Deanne Fitzgerald (22:12).
The 5th Annual MAD Dash 5K & Fun Run supports the Surry County Schools Educational Foundation in its mission to help improve the education level of our county through enhanced-learning opportunities for students and teachers. One of those opportunities is the School Allotment program, which provides funding for each school to use for student and classroom needs that are not covered in regular funding, including support for Battle of the Books teams, choral competition registration fees, robotics supplies and more.
“We had a great turnout this year, increasing our participation over last year by more than 50%,” said John Priddy, Chairman of the Board of Directors for the Foundation. “We added a team challenge this year, and every elementary school had a GROW (Go Run Our World) Strong Team running in the event. It is wonderful to see how our community, employees, and business partners support education and Surry County Schools!”
