2017 STEMmersion Externship Program
Thank you to our business partners:
The STEMmersion Externship Program provides teachers in Surry County Schools the opportunity to spend time in local businesses learning how science, technology, engineering and math concepts are applied in real-world, authentice situations. Teachers then take what they've learned back to the classroom and incorporate this knowledge into lesson plans.
Sereena Church, East Surry High School - I loved spending time in the courtroom over the course of three days. I heard many cases and learned how the standard sentencing is determined for a variety of cases. I visited Judges' chambers and also visited with the Clerk of Court while Court was in session in order to get a firsthand feel of things. I sat in the jury box in Superior Court and witnessed a motion to dismiss charges due to lack of just cause. The Assistant DA and the defendant's attorney had to present the entire case to the judge for his ruling in the matter. I enjoy watching the process. It was interesting to watch the differences in the judges and how they handle cases. I feel I can share this opportunity with my students and have a better reflection due to a hands-on experience.
Robin Huels, Pilot Mountain Middle School - I completed my externship at Phillips Van Heusen in Jonesville. PVH is a major logistics company whose major brands are Calvin Klein, Ralph Lauren / Chaps, Van Husen, Bass and Arrow. It was a wonderful experience. I spent 2 full days with supervisors and key employees in every department. I was quite impressed with the company and all of the employees that I had the opportunity with whom to work. I requested an opportunity to learn more about international trade and commerce and this externship delivered. I would recommend this experience to anyone interested in these areas. Thank you for the opportunity.
Matthew Carter, Vice President- Engineering and Endoscopy, Cook Medical - We would like to thank you for the opportunity to participate in the STEMmersion program. We hosted Jennifer Collins on July 24 and 31 and Martha Manzonelli on July 31. We enjoyed sharing information with them and hope it was a valuable, fun experience that will be useful as they consider activities in the classroom.
