In the September Business & Education Economic Partnership meeting, Dr. Travis Reeves, Superintendent of Surry County Schools, Dr. David Shockley, President of Surry Community College, and Crystal Folger-Hawks, Career Coach, discussed a new program entitled Next Generation Career Academy funded by the Golden Leaf Foundation.
On December 14, Sunrise Rotary Members accepted an $820 check from the academically gifted classes of Copeland and Dobson Elementary Schools. The students donated the money to benefit the Rotarians’ efforts to eradicate polio. Rotary, along with other partners, has reduced polio cases by 99.9 percent worldwide since their first project to vaccinate children in the Philippines in 1979.

Mr. Blake McCraw is the February Surry County Schools Employee of the Month. Mr. McCraw is the Band Instructor for both North Surry High School and Gentry Middle School. He has worked nine years at North where he currently has 85 band students. This is his third year at Gentry with 100 students.
