Parent and Family Engagement Plan 2024-2025

Encourage Parent Involvement

We will provide a school culture that is inviting to students and families.
We will work as a team to build a supportive and caring atmosphere conducive to learning for all students.
We will hold an annual Title I parent meeting and notify parents that Franklin Elementary is a school-wide Title I School. We will explain what that means at parent meetings within the first six weeks of school.
We will deliver written notification (Title I Brochure) at the beginning of year parent meetings.
We will hold an annual ML parent meeting and provide Title I information to Spanish speaking parents at this meeting.
We will hold beginning of year parent meetings with each family where teachers discuss goals and objectives to be taught from the North Carolina Standard Course of Study.
We will state expectations of students, parents and school; review and have parents sign the parent/teacher/student school Title I compact.
We will explain how to use planners and how to communicate with the classroom teacher.
We will ask parents to check planners for homework completion, teacher notes, and other important information from school.
We will distribute planners containing Surry County student handbooks, which must be signed by students and parents.
We will provide weekly or monthly newsletters distributed by teachers for each grade level.
We will provide home visits to assist and encourage parent involvement in student achievement and attendance as needed.
Administrators will communicate with parents using School Messenger on a weekly basis through phone messages in English and Spanish.
We will recruit parent and community volunteers to support special programs and events at school.
We will update parents on student progress once quarterly and will send written notification when a child falls below grade level performance in reading, math, and/or writing.
Report cards will be sent home, signed, and returned at the end of each nine week grading period.
We will hold parent/teacher conferences before the first report card is sent home.
We will invite parents to be a part of the MTSS (Multi Tiered System of Support Team) for their child when a need for intervention arises.
We will invite parents to Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) meetings.
We will inform parents of volunteer opportunities at Franklin and ask parents to complete a form if they are willing to volunteer in different areas of the school.
We will share parent volunteer information with staff and ask them to utilize parent volunteers who are willing to contribute to the school community.
We will provide a translator for non-English speaking parents as needed.
We will send all schoolwide correspondence in English, Spanish, and other native languages as needed.
We will hold a minimum of two parent engagement sessions; once per semester, planned by each team to meet the needs of their students/parents. These will be in addition to back-to-school orientation meetings.
We will provide a one-page “Avoiding the Summer Slide” document to all parents to help them understand how to keep student skills sharp over the summer.
We will schedule School Improvement Team Meetings with a parent representative being invited on a monthly basis, or as determined necessary.
We will invite parents to academic celebrations and end of year celebrations.
We will maintain a school website and Facebook page to keep parents informed.
We will provide counseling services, communicating with parents and other community agencies when needed.
We will provide a school nurse on site daily or as scheduled by the district.
We will utilize our School Social Worker on campus each week to meet the needs of families.

Assist Parent Understanding of Academic Requirements

We will host rising kindergarten students and parents at Beginner’s Night, usually held in March.
We will explain to third grade parents about Read to Achieve legislation.
We will send home EOG scores to parents with information about the test results.
We will send home Amplify Home Connect letters in report cards to all students, and will review the results in person at a parent conference to explain.
We will provide home visits as needed to supply materials and review pertinent information with parents.
We will educate parents concerning healthful living components.
We will notify parents in parent conferences and by letter if their child is at risk of not being on grade level by the end of the academic year.
We will share examples of problem solving strategies for math.
We will provide reading and writing strategies for parents to help their children with literacy development.
The Principal will send a monthly newsletter to all families with updates, reminders, and an upcoming calendar of events.

Coordinate Parent/Community Interaction

We will coordinate Christmas assistance for disadvantaged families with the Salvation Army.
We will continue Bulldog Family Assistance Fund where faculty members donate to provide additional assistance to families in cases of need.
We will continue our Backpack program to assist families in need of food weekly coordinating with churches and other community sponsors.
We will maintain a relationship with the Surry Arts Council hosting programs at the school or sending students to programs provided by the Arts Council.
We will participate in Jump Rope for Heart.
We will invite community workers into classrooms to share about various occupations as correlated with grade level standards.
We will host an annual blood drive in coordination with the American Red Cross.
We will provide field trips to local plays and historic sites to increase knowledge base and community awareness.
We will coordinate health services for students with the help of our school nurse, social worker, counselor, and community agencies.
We will participate in the The Friendly Dental program to provide all K-5 students with free dental care.
We will publicize school events, student achievements, volunteer contributions, and business partnerships in the local media.
We will invite parents to attend DARE graduation sponsored by the Surry County Sheriff’s Department.
We will host Fifth Grade Graduation inviting parents, students, and the community.
We will participate in the Surry Arts Ball with a donation for auction annually.
We will partner with NC Cooperative Extension to provide nutritional education for second and third grade students.
We will host Red Ribbon Week activities.
We will solicit community and business partnerships as needed for various projects.
We will implement an information and accountability system for reporting and monitoring of disciplinary referrals, suspensions, retentions, and attendance to determine the impact on student achievement for sharing with the school community.
We will participate in a district-wide literacy competition and invite parents to attend the competition.
We will host special events such as the Spelling Bee and Science Fair, sending school-level winners to county-level competitions.
We will seek community partners to support our Grow Strong Running Team.
We will inform parents of practices and events related to the Grow Strong Running Team, and all other after school club opportunities.
We will provide reading rewards for at-home reading.
We will host a Book Fair twice a year inviting parents, students, and community volunteers.
We will celebrate Read Across America to highlight reading and ask community volunteers to read to students.
We will educate and invite parents to support our implementation of the leadership framework.
