Inclement Weather Guide
Employee Inclement Weather Guide
Employees should use good judgment and this guide to determine their individual course of action during inclement weather. Students and staff make up the Surry County Schools family. The safety and well-being of our school system staff are equally as important to us as the safety and well-being of our students. The superintendent will decide the students' schedules. Each staff member must make his or her own responsible decision when weather conditions are hazardous. Your principal, supervisor, or superintendent will work with you within these guidelines, but only you are in a position to balance your options with safety.
If no weather announcement is made, school will be open as usual.
In the case of school cancellation, a transition to remote learning, school delay, or early dismissal due to inclement weather, it is important that all staff clearly understand their options.
If school is delayed:
The following announcement will be made:
“Surry County Schools are on a two-hour delay for students and staff.” Or, “Surry County Schools are on a three-hour delay for students and staff.”
2-hour delay - Students and Staff are expected to report to school two hours later than their “normal” report time.
3-hour delay - Students and Staff are expected to report to school three hours later than their “normal” report time. (School Nutrition reports as directed by the supervisor.)
******************************************************
“Normal” report times:
Elementary School 7:30 a.m.
Middle School 7:30 a.m.
High School 7:30 a.m.
If school is dismissed early:
Teachers and other school-based employees may be dismissed at the discretion of the principal after all buses have left and all responsibilities have been satisfied.
Central Office Personnel may be dismissed at the discretion of the superintendent or designee.
Delay and Early Release Days only apply to employees who work. If an employee is absent due to a scheduled leave day, the employee must take leave for the entire workday (Certified employees - 7.5 hours and Classified employees - 8.0 hours).
If school is canceled:
There are two types of announcements that may be made:
1) “Surry County Schools Closed, Optional Teacher Workday.” When this announcement is made, employees have the following options:
Report for the workday...OR,
Take unscheduled “annual leave” (if available)...OR,
At the discretion of the principal, arrange to make-up the time (certified staff)...OR,
Take a day without pay...OR,
Take “personal leave” (if available).
Classified Staff may make-up time, at the discretion of the principal, as long as they do not exceed the 40-hour workweek.
2) “Surry County Schools, Closed for students and staff.” When this announcement is made, school-based, 10-month employees should not report to work.
School Nutrition Employees do not report to work on any day when students are not in school.
School Nutrition Managers and full-time school nutrition employees may elect to take unscheduled “annual leave.”
11-month and 12-month employees (including the central office and other district personnel) have the following options:
Report for the workday...OR,
Take unscheduled “annual leave” (if available)...OR,
At the discretion of your supervisor, arrange to make-up the time (certified staff)...OR,
Take a day without pay...OR,
Take “personal leave” (if available).
Classified Staff may make-up time, at the discretion of the supervisor, as long as they do not exceed the 40-hour workweek.
NOTE: On days when school is canceled for students, employees who decide to work will be allowed to report 1 hour later than their normal time. Employees who report to work after that time may be allowed to make up the time or take leave.
If school transitions to a remote learning day for inclement weather:
There are two types of announcements that may be made:
1) “Surry County Schools will transition to a remote learning day for students.” When this announcement is made, employees have the following options:
Teachers and staff report at the normal time.
Employees who determine they cannot report to the worksite due to safety concerns and have the ability to work remotely may choose to exercise that option. Employees should notify their supervisor if they choose this option.
2) “Surry County Schools will transition to a remote learning day for students and staff.” When this announcement is made, employees have the following options:
School-based, 10-month employees should not report to the worksite. Employees should telework, if applicable.
School Nutrition Employees do not report to work on any day when students are not in school.
School Nutrition Managers and full-time school nutrition employees may elect to take unscheduled “annual leave”.
11-month and 12-month employees (including the central office and other district personnel) have the following options:
Report for the workday...OR,

Take unscheduled “annual leave” (if available)...OR,
