SCS Academic Performance
Surry County Schools continued to outpace the rest of state in academic achievement according to the 2016-17 Performance and Growth of North Carolina Public Schools report presented to State Board of Education members.
In addition to the traditional end-of-grade and end-of-course proficiencies parents have come to expect, the state also released ACT, ACT WorkKeys, cohort graduation rates, the percentage of graduates passing rigorous math courses, academic growth target measures, and school performance grades.
Surry County Schools ranked 13th of 115 school systems in the state in Overall Academic Performance with 67.2 percent of all tests in all subjects at Achievement Level 3 or higher, up two places and 1.1 percent from last year.
“Being 13th in the state for academic performance of 115 school districts is an accomplishment that makes our Surry County Schools’ family very proud. We realize this does not happen by chance. The implementation of the strategic plan set by the Surry County Schools Board of Education lead us in the right direction to move forward, and the deliberate high-impact teaching and learning in every classroom everyday also moved the needle. Our teachers, our administrators, and all our support staff are committed to providing personalized and customized educational experiences for students daily so they can achieve to their highest potential,” commented Superintendent Travis L. Reeves.
Across all grade levels (3-8) on the Reading, Mathematics, and Science End-of-Grade assessments, 67.3 percent of Surry County students scored at Achievement Level 3 and above compared to 58.8 percent across the state. Surry County Schools had two End-of-Grade subject areas ranked in the state top 10: 5th grade Mathematics (3rd) and 4th grade Reading (8th). Six additional End-of-Grade subjects had rankings in the top 20: 5th Grade Reading (12th); 5th grade Science (12th); 4th Grade Math (13th); and 6th Grade Math (13th); 3rd Grade Reading (18th); and 8th Grade Math (18th).
Similarly, on the English II, Math I, and Biology End-of-Course assessments, 66.7 percent of Surry County students scored at Achievement Level 3 and above, up 4.2 percent from last year. Proficiencies across the state averaged 60.8 percent. As in the End-of-Grade results, Surry County had a End-of-Course ranking in the state top 15: Math I (13th).
As for graduation rates, Surry County graduated a record 90.6 percent of students from the 2013-14 9th grade cohort in the spring of 2017. The state graduation rate for the cohort was 86.5 percent. Individual school rates within the Surry County School System continued to excel: the Surry Early College graduated over 95 percent of all students; East Surry’s rate was 93.6; Surry Central’s rate was 92.7; and North Surry graduated 85.6 of all students (an all-time school high).
Several schools across the district, in addition to high performance, also had high academic growth. Three schools exceeded the rigorous state academic growth targets. Flat Rock Elementary exceeded growth targets this year and Surry Early College and Central Middle School both exceeded growth for the third consecutive year. Fourteen additional schools met the state growth targets, and 2 schools did not meet annual growth.
In addition to the other academic factors, North Carolina also released the fourth annual School Performance Grades to the State Board of Education showing that 77.4 percent of traditional public schools earned grades of C or better. In Surry County Schools, 100 percent received grades of C or better. The Surry Early College High School of Design was the only school in our area of North Carolina to receive the A+ grade from the state due to high performance, high growth, and low achievement gaps for disadvantaged students. Only 3 percent of schools across the state achieved this designation.
Superintendent Reeves also stated, “I commend teachers and students on these achievements and encourage everyone to continue to press forward. We are extremely pleased with the results of 2016-2017, but it is a new school year with new challenges. There are areas of concern we will continue to focus on in order to provide a quality education to all students. We must all be champions for the cause for student success, and we must be committed to and grounded in our Promise for ALL. We must promise to help our students achieve, grow as leaders, and be prepared for college, careers and life. In order to continue to move the needle, we must make that promise for ALL Surry Schools’ students.”
