The Surry County Board of Education and Dobson Elementary School celebrated a monumental event on Tuesday, April 23, 2019.  A groundbreaking event was held to physically and symbolically begin a construction and renovation process that was over five years in the making.

Principal Sharia Templeton presided over the event with students representing the student body taking leadership roles throughout the program.  Student Council President, Master Brayden Woodring, delivered the invocation and Miss Caroline Scott, Student Council Vice-President, discussed the student impact the construction will bring for the Tigers.  Dobson’s 2018-2019 Teacher of the Year, Mrs. Amy Holt, discussed the significance of this renovation project and reflected on being a student in the buildings that will now be renovated.  Mrs. Robin Narehood, PTO President, and the parent of three children who all attended Dobson Elementary remarked on the impact this project will have on future students and the Dobson community.

Surry County Board Vice-Chairperson, Mr. Clark Goings, commented, “This groundbreaking marks a new beginning in many ways for the students and staff at Dobson Elementary.  Construction and renovation is a sign of progress and this is a great opportunity for the Dobson community to have revitalized learning spaces for 21st Century learners.”

“Each of these students and their parents has a dream for them and their future.  Our job as educators is to help students fulfill those dreams.  Thank you to the Surry County Commissioners for committing resources to this project so we can make this dream a reality,” remarked Dr. Travis L. Reeves, Superintendent.  Superintendent Reeves went on to say, “Bess Streeter Aldrich wrote in her book, A Lantern in Her Hand, ‘You have to dream things out.  . . .It keeps a kind of ideal before you.’  This groundbreaking marks the ideal of what an educational setting should look like, feel like, and sound like.  This all started as a dream that became a vision resulting in us standing here today ready to embark on a new journey for the Dobson Elementary School community.  Let’s break some ground!”

Construction is set to begin the first of May, and the vision for the Dobson Elementary construction project includes the following:

  • Focuses on improving safety by renovating the front entrance and enables all students to be under one roof
  • Enhances the overall learning environment for students with the creation of a new two-story classroom building
