ESHS COVID-19 Updates

Wednesday, March 25, 2020

Good afternoon, this is Jared Jones, principal of East Surry High School with several important announcements.

As we continue to respond to COVID-19, to ensure the health and safety of all students and staff, and out of an abundance of caution, all Surry County Schools will be operating on modified hours. Beginning tomorrow, all schools will be open from 10:00 am until 2:00 pm primarily for FREE grab and go meal services and for essential school business only. We will also continue to provide curbside service as much as we can. We will continue to meet the educational and nutritional needs of our students so please email or call if you need anything outside of this window.

Students and parents, we have had many questions regarding the 2020 commencement ceremony, cap & gown pick-up, prom, and many other events. As you know, we are taking this situation day-by-day and will continue working with the most current information available to make the best decisions we can for our students. On Monday, March 23, Governor Cooper announced the closure of public schools until May 15. At this time, no decisions have been made to alter our commencement service. We commit to being transparent and timely in our communication with you in the event that we need to make necessary changes. Surry County Schools understands what a special time this is for our families, and is committed to ensuring that our seniors are properly recognized and celebrated for this great achievement.

Next Thursday, April 2 from 10:00-12:00, seniors will have the opportunity to pick up their cap & gown and invitations through curbside service. We will have school personnel along with a representative from Jostens located along the sidewalk adjacent to the student and bus parking lot ready to assist our students. Any outstanding balances should be paid at pick-up.

Any student that ordered a class ring and has not arranged delivery, can also pick up their ring next Thursday from 10:00-12:00 through curbside pick up.

We have several events that were scheduled between now and May 15, including National Honor Society & National Technical Honor Society induction ceremonies, prom, and senior awards day.  At this time, there have been no decisions made regarding these events. As with graduation, we will communicate updates to you in a timely and transparent manner as we get more information.

As we continue implementing the SCS Distance Learning Plan, please stay connected to your child’s teachers and our school administration. Our staff will continue to reach out to our students and parents by phone, PowerSchool Learning (Haiku), and Google Meet. Parents, if you need to meet with a teacher or administrator, please call or email us and we’ll be happy to set up a time to meet with you by phone or virtually.

Thank you all for your flexibility, patience, and support during this unfamiliar time. Have a great evening.
