NSHS Students Receive The Armfield Scholarship

The Edward M. Armfield, Sr. Foundation annually awards scholarships to deserving students graduating from each of the five traditional high schools in Surry County.[ Scholarships are awarded to students who will be attending four-year colleges or universities or Surry Community College.  This year’s award recipients were honored with a reception at the Surry Community College Viticulture Center at 2:00 in the afternoon on Wednesday, May 22, 2019.

Surry County School System students received 33 of the 48 Armfield scholarships awarded.  Dr. Jill Reinhardt, Assistant Superintendent for Surry County Schools along with the principals and school counselors of each of the Surry County School System high schools recognized the 2019-2020 Armfield scholarship recipients and their families.  Those students from North Surry were: Anna Burcham, Andrew Butler, Juliana Cooke, Carson Draughn, Charles Gates, Emma Haynes, Cesar Hernandez, Jensen McHone, Eli Riggs, and Callie Willard.

Dr. Reinhardt commented, “I am so proud of our young people and I want to thank the parents in the room for being so supportive.  What a difference this scholarship will make in the lives of these students.  This scholarship is the gift that keeps on giving to Surry County.”

The featured guest for this year’s award ceremony was Miss Micah Cousins, a previous Armfield Scholarship recipient who is also a Surry County School System alumna and graduate of the Surry Central High School class of 2015.  Miss Cousins is currently a student at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah, where she is pursuing her master of arts in English, is teaching freshmen writing composition as part of her graduate program, and has aspirations of getting her doctoral degree to teach English at the college level.

Miss Cousins stated, “I am so grateful. Because of the Armfield Scholarship, I have no student loans and the dignity of financial freedom beyond college so I can begin a cycle of giving.   Financial freedom also contributes to economic security.  The value of the scholarship is extended into the value of life fulfillment and the attainment of dreams, faith, and hope in the future.”

Congratulations to all of these outstanding award recipients.
