Surry County Schools announces the upcoming retirement of Alison York, principal of Flat Rock Elementary School. Her final day of service will be July 31, 2025.

Mrs. York began her journey with Surry County Schools as a teacher at Westfield Elementary, where she served for six years. Over the course of her distinguished career, she has held a variety of roles and served in multiple schools, always demonstrating a deep commitment to student success and a passion for cultivating positive school communities. Her service includes one year at Flat Rock Elementary, five years at Central Middle School, four years at Pilot Mountain Elementary, five years at Cedar Ridge Elementary, one year at Mountain Park Elementary, three years as assistant principal at Central Middle, and one year as assistant principal at Dobson Elementary.

In addition to her school-based leadership, Mrs. York has served as a trusted mentor to many across the district’s Leadership Team - supporting new principals, assistant principals, and guiding directors. She has also served on numerous district-level committees, offering thoughtful insight and steady leadership to initiatives that have shaped instructional practices, school improvement planning, and system-wide growth. Her wisdom, encouragement, and experience have been invaluable assets to the continued progress of Surry County Schools.

“Serving the students, staff, and families of Flat Rock Elementary has been one of the greatest joys of my career,” said York. “While this decision is bittersweet, I look forward to spending more time with my family and beginning a new chapter. I will always hold the Dragon Family close to my heart.”

The principal position at Flat Rock Elementary will be posted in the coming days. Mrs. York will work closely with the district over the summer to support a smooth transition and assist the incoming principal in preparing for a strong start to the 2025–2026 school year.

“Alison York has led with dedication, integrity, and care,” said Dr. Travis L. Reeves, Superintendent of Surry County Schools. “We are grateful for her years of service and leadership. She leaves a legacy of excellence and a school community that has flourished under her guidance.”
