Surry County Schools announces the retirement of Mr. Robert Draughn, Director of Construction, Planning, and Design, after 25 years of dedicated service to the school system.
Mr. Draughn has been a cornerstone of Surry County Schools' operational success, serving first as Director of Maintenance for 22 years before transitioning to his current leadership role for the past three years. Throughout his career, he has played a vital role in planning and executing facility improvements, campus safety upgrades, and modernizing learning environments to support student success.
“Robert’s leadership and commitment to the physical integrity and safety of our schools have left a lasting legacy,” said Dr. Travis L. Reeves, Superintendent of Surry County Schools. “He has been instrumental in shaping the learning environments our students and staff enjoy today. His work, often behind the scenes, has touched every school in our district.”
Under Mr. Draughn’s guidance, Surry County Schools has completed numerous capital improvement projects, including new school construction, renovations, HVAC upgrades, safety vestibule installations, athletic facility enhancements, and the design and construction of new learning spaces. His expertise and forward-thinking approach have helped align facilities with the instructional goals of the district.
Reflecting on his career, Mr. Draughn shared, “It’s been a privilege to serve the students, staff, and community of Surry County Schools. I’ve been fortunate to work alongside a team that cares deeply about education and the spaces where it happens. I leave knowing the district is in great hands and look forward to seeing all the great things that will continue to unfold.”
Known for his quiet dedication, deep institutional knowledge, and steady presence, Mr. Draughn has built lasting relationships with colleagues, contractors, and community partners throughout his tenure.
