Surry County Schools announces the upcoming retirement of Mrs. Amy Harris, Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction, effective August 1, 2025. With a career spanning decades in public education, Mrs. Harris leaves behind a legacy of service, leadership, and commitment to students and educators alike.
Throughout her tenure, Mrs. Harris has served in nearly every capacity within K-12 education, including elementary, middle, and high school roles. Beginning her career as a secondary mathematics teacher, she later served as an instructional coach, ML coordinator, testing coordinator, assistant principal, principal, Director of Secondary Curriculum, and, most recently, as Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction. In 2021, her dedication and excellence in leadership were recognized when she was named Surry County Schools’ Principal of the Year.
Mrs. Harris earned her advanced degree in Educational Administration and Supervision and holds a Superintendent’s License from East Carolina University. Her experience and expertise have played a vital role in supporting district-wide academic initiatives and promoting instructional excellence across all grade levels.
Reflecting on her time in Surry County Schools, Mrs. Harris shared: “Serving children through public education has been the greatest honor of my life. Every decision has been grounded in the belief that all children deserve to be known, supported, and given every opportunity to thrive. My career in public education has been far more than a job; it has been a calling and a joy. Each chapter has shaped me, and my time in Surry County has been among the most meaningful. This district has challenged me, inspired me, and helped me grow in ways I never anticipated. The deep commitment to students that defines SCS makes it a truly special place to serve. I am deeply grateful for the opportunities I’ve had in Surry County Schools. It has been a privilege to serve under the leadership of Dr. Reeves. From personal experience, I can say with certainty that he is the most innovative, forward-thinking, and leader-building superintendent I have ever known. His student-centered leadership has elevated Surry County Schools in remarkable ways, and I am so very thankful for his trust, encouragement, and support over the past 7 years.”
Superintendent Dr. Travis L. Reeves remarked, “Amy Harris has been an invaluable leader in our district over the past seven years. Her insight and intuition, experience with people, and heart for students have made a lasting impact on the students and staff of Surry County Schools. We are grateful for her years of service and wish her all the best in this next chapter.”
Mrs. Harris’s leadership, warmth, and passion for education will be deeply missed, but her influence will continue to resonate throughout the district. Surry County Schools thanks her for her service and congratulates her on a well-earned retirement.
