Dove Hunter and Theresa Atkins

Surry County Schools announces the retirement of Dove Hunter, effective March 1, following a dedicated career serving students, staff, and the community. Theresa Atkins has been named as her successor, ensuring continuity and strong leadership for the district.

Dove Hunter has served Surry County Schools for over 23 years, during which time she held several key roles, including Federal Programs Administrative Assistant, Curriculum and Instruction Administrative Assistant, and Executive Assistant to the Superintendent and Board of Education. Throughout her tenure, Hunter was known for her commitment and support of students and staff, leaving a lasting impact on the district. Her leadership and service have helped strengthen programs and support the success of students across Surry County.

As I begin this next chapter, I do so with a full heart and confidence in the continued success of this district.”

Theresa Atkins brings a wealth of experience to her new role, having served Surry County Schools recently as the Administrative Assistant to Curriculum and Instruction. With 19 years in education, Atkins has worked in Computer and Technology at Franklin Elementary School, as a Computer Science Instructor, School-based Tech, Public Information Officer, and Finance Officer at Pilot Mountain Middle School, where she has demonstrated strong leadership and a commitment to student success. Since January 2024, she has served as the Administrative Assistant to the Curriculum and Instruction Department“I am truly honored to serve Surry County Schools in my new role as Executive Assistant and look forward to working more closely with the Board of Education and our talented educators. I am dedicated to supporting district leadership through thoughtful collaboration, careful attention to detail, and clear communication, keeping the success of our schools, staff, and students at the heart of everything we do.”
