Surry County Schools is pleased to announce that Dr. Kelly Nelson-Danley has been named the incoming Director of Federal Programs. Dr. Nelson-Danley will assume the role following the retirement of LuAnne Llewellyn, whose leadership and service have had a lasting impact on the district.
“I am excited and grateful for the opportunity to serve Surry County Schools as Director of Federal Programs,” says Dr. Nelson-Danley. “The journey and experiences I gained in Rockingham County Schools have truly paved the way for this next chapter, and I am deeply thankful for the leaders, colleagues, and students who shaped my growth along that road. I look forward to partnering with staff, families, and the community to support and serve the students of Surry County with purpose, equity, and heart.”
Dr. Nelson-Danley currently serves as a principal with Rockingham County Schools and brings nearly two decades of experience in public education, including service as a teacher, instructional coach, assistant principal, and principal. She holds a Doctor of Education in Curriculum and Instruction, a master’s degree in Reading Education, and a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education. Her professional background includes extensive work in program evaluation, needs assessments, data-driven instruction, and professional development; core components of effective federal program administration.
Throughout her career, Dr. Nelson-Danley has led initiatives focused on improving student outcomes, strengthening instructional practices, and expanding family and community engagement, particularly through Title I programming. As a school leader, she has overseen MTSS implementation, coordinated school improvement efforts, supported compliance and reporting processes, and guided schools through measurable academic growth.
“Dr. Nelson-Danley brings a strong instructional foundation and a deep understanding of how federal programs support our schools,” said Shannon DuPlessis, Assistant Superintendent of Academic Services. “Her experience and leadership will help ensure continued compliance, effective use of resources, and meaningful support for our schools.”
Surry County Schools also extends its sincere appreciation to LuAnne Llewellyn for her years of dedicated service. Her commitment to students and staff has helped ensure federal resources were used strategically to support student success across the district.
Dr. Nelson-Danley will assume her new role following Mrs. Llewellyn’s retirement.
