Surry County Schools announces the retirement of Superintendent Dr. Travis L. Reeves, effective June 30, 2026, following more than 30 years of service to public education in North Carolina, including 13 and a half years leading Surry County Schools.
Dr. Reeves has served as Superintendent since January 2013, guiding the district through a period of growth, innovation, and strong academic performance. During his tenure, Surry County Schools has become a recognized leader in public education across the state, driven by a focus on student success, workforce readiness, and community partnerships.
“It has been one of the greatest honors of my professional life to serve as Superintendent of Surry County Schools,” said Dr. Reeves. “I will deeply miss the genuine people who make up this school system. Our educators, staff, and leaders are true heroes who serve students with dedication and heart each day.”
Under Dr. Reeves’ leadership, the district reached an all-time high graduation rate of 95 percent and strengthened its commitment to preparing students for both college and careers. He championed initiatives that expanded access to work-based learning, pre-apprenticeships, and apprenticeships, while fostering strong partnerships with local industries. Programs developed through collaborations such as Surry-Yadkin Works and the FLEET program have connected students to meaningful, real-world career pathways. Dr. Reeves also prioritized the development of a strong leadership culture across the district, centered on leading self, leading with others, and changing the world together. His commitment to innovation led to the expansion of personalized learning opportunities, including the establishment of Surry Virtual Academy and Surry Online Magnet School, providing flexible options for students and families.
In addition to academic advancements, Dr. Reeves emphasized student and staff safety and well-being. During his tenure, the district successfully placed a School Resource Officer in every school, enhanced campus safety measures, expanded literacy initiatives at the elementary level, and introduced wellness programs such as GROW Strong running clubs. A strong steward of public resources, Dr. Reeves maintained a focus on fiscal responsibility while supporting key capital improvements across the district. His leadership helped strengthen collaboration between the district, the Surry County Board of Education, the Surry County Board of Commissioners, and local business and community partners, ensuring continued investment in students and schools.
Reflecting on his career, Dr. Reeves noted the importance of relationships and shared purpose. “I am especially grateful to have worked in a school system where relationships matter, professionalism is valued, and a shared commitment to students guide our daily work,” he said.
Dr. Reeves is the third-longest-serving superintendent in the history of Surry County Schools, which began in 1885, a legacy that reflects his dedication to the students, staff, and community he has served. Before joining Surry County Schools, Dr. Reeves served as Superintendent of Ashe County Schools and held various roles in education, including as a teacher and an administrator. Throughout his career, he has remained deeply committed to public education and community service, serving on numerous local and regional boards and organizations.
Surry County Schools extends its sincere appreciation to Dr. Reeves for his decades of leadership and service to students, staff, and our community. His impact will be felt for generations to come.
