Surry County Schools is pleased to announce the appointment of Matthew Richardson as the next principal of Surry Central High School.
A proud graduate of Surry Central High School, Richardson returns to lead the school where his educational journey began. He brings more than 21 years of experience in public education, having served as a teacher, coach, assistant principal, and principal at the elementary, middle, and high school levels.
Richardson has served as principal of Mount Olive Elementary School in Stokes County since 2020, where he helped foster a positive school culture focused on student achievement, teacher leadership, and continuous improvement. Under his leadership, the school met academic growth goals each year and earned a "B" school performance grade. Prior to that, he served as assistant principal at Chestnut Grove Middle School.
Before entering school administration, Richardson spent 13 years as a physical education teacher, including 11 years at Surry Central High School. During that time, he also coached multiple athletic programs, served as department chair, and played an instrumental role in developing the school's strength and conditioning program.
"Matthew is a relationship-driven leader who understands the traditions, values, and expectations that make Surry Central High School such a special place," said Superintendent Dr. Steve Hall. "His experience and passion for student success make him an outstanding choice to lead the Golden Eagles."
For Richardson, the opportunity to return to Surry Central is both personal and professional.
"Surry Central has always held a special place in my heart," Richardson said. "As a graduate, former teacher, and coach, I've experienced firsthand what makes the Surry Central community so special. I am honored to return as principal and look forward to working alongside our students, staff, families, and community as we continue building on the strong tradition of excellence that defines Surry Central High School."
Richardson earned a Master of School Administration from the University of North Carolina Wilmington and a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education from Appalachian State University.
He and his family reside in the Dobson community, where their two sons attend Surry County Schools.
