#SCSCelebrates | Please join Surry County Schools in congratulating the Surry County Schools' Teacher of the Month, sponsored by Accurate Insurance Solutions, Mr. Darren Hiatt! Mr. Hiatt is the November Teacher of the Month and was recognized by a former student for his outstanding work both inside and outside of the classroom. Mr. Hiatt currently serves as a Social Studies teacher at North Surry High School-Official, as well as the Online Economics and Personal Finance instructor for Surry Virtual Academy and Surry Online Magnet School.
The nomination reads: "Mr. Hiatt always brought a smile to my face. During his time at Surry Central High School, he made learning something to look forward to. When Hiatt transferred to North Surry High School, he communicated with all of his former students, expressing his love for us and how it was such a tough decision to make. I still email Mr. Hiatt and look forward to any interaction I have with him. He is truly an inspiration and loves his job. My two minute conversation I had with him at a football game last Friday made my day. He never fails to make you feel loved and appreciated." Congratulations, Mr. Hiatt! 💙🎉

Parent-Teacher Conferences to be held, Thursday, October 10! Sign up!

Bus 150 will not be running this morning!

Out of an abundance of caution, Surry County Schools will operate on a two-hour delay on Tuesday, October 1, 2024. This delay will help with visibility for bus drivers and allow additional time for families to safely commute to school campuses. Students who ride the bus should plan to arrive at their bus stop two hours later than they normally would. Thank you, have a good evening, and be safe tomorrow!

Come on Greyhound community and help our Ashe County friends during their time of need! Let's Fill This Bus! Drop off items at North Surry between 7:30-3:30.

EARLY DISMISSAL AND REMOTE LEARNING DAY - HURRICANE HELENE
Due to heavy rain and potential flooding, Surry County Schools will dismiss students at 2:00 p.m. today, Thursday, September 26, 2024. All after-school events and activities are canceled and there will be no after-school childcare this afternoon.
Due to the hazardous weather outlook for tomorrow, which could impact student drivers, bus routes, and overall safety, Friday, September 27, will be a remote learning day for students and staff. Students should check their learning management system for assignments and instructions from their teachers.
Safety is the top priority for Surry County Schools, and we believe this decision to be in the best interest of our students, staff, and families. Thank you for your understanding, and please stay safe over the next few days during this severe weather event.

#SCSCelebrates | 🎨✨ Celebrating Arts in Education Week! 📚🎭
Whether it's through music, visual arts, or theater, the arts enrich our lives and foster innovation. Let's recognize the power of creativity, imagination, and expression in shaping young minds. 🎉💡

#SCSCelebrates | The North Carolina Governor's School is a four-week summer residential program for gifted and talented high school students, integrating academic disciplines, the arts, and unique courses on each of two campuses. Learning focuses on the exploration of the most recent ideas and concepts in each discipline, and it does not involve credit, tests, or grades. Students are selected to attend through a competitive process after being nominated by their public school unit or non-public school. Two students from Surry County Schools were nominated, then applied for, auditioned, and were accepted into this prestigious program. Walker York was accepted into the NC Governor's School for Choral Music. Cassidy Mills was accepted to the NC Governor’s School for Theater. They both attended the program over the summer, and Surry County Schools was incredibly proud to recognize them at the September Board of Education meeting.
Congratulations to these two students on this great accomplishment! 🎭🎼

Attention Seniors: NC law requires a meningococcal booster dose in the 12th grade. An up-to-date immunization record indicating that your student has received all required immunizations is due by the first day of attendance at school. If proof of immunization is not provided within 30 calendar days after school entry, your student will not be allowed to attend school until it is provided, as required by law. Please turn in records to Nurse Smith or to Mrs. Hutchens in the front office by 9/11/24. If you have specific questions related to your child, please reach out to Nurse Smith.

Good afternoon. This is Paige Badgett, principal of North Surry High School. This morning, North Surry Administrators received an anonymous tip through the Say Something Anonymous Reporting System that there was a potential weapon on campus. Based on the information in the tip, the school was placed under lockdown. I immediately contacted law enforcement, who responded quickly and began investigating the tip. Law enforcement moved from classroom to classroom lifting the lockdown. No weapon was found.
Student safety is the highest priority for North Surry High School. We work hard every day to ensure the safety of our Greyhounds.
I hope that you have a restful evening. I look forward to seeing students, faculty and staff on campus tomorrow.

Follow- up message:
Good morning. This is a follow-up safety update for North Surry High School. At this time, the students and staff have resumed a normal schedule.

This morning at 9:47 AM, North Surry High School received an anonymous tip that there was a potential weapon on campus. Principal Paige Badgett immediately placed the school on lockdown to investigate along with the Surry County Sheriff's Office. Law enforcement acted quickly and swiftly to ensure the safety and well-being of all students. At approximately 10:15 AM, law enforcement moved the school from lockdown to shelter in place (students remain in the classroom and resume instruction).
I want to assure you that our top priority is the safety and well-being of all our students and staff, and we take all necessary precautions to ensure everyone’s safety.
