An Update for Our Shoals Elementary Families

We wanted to share an update regarding the proposed Pre-K classroom at Shoals Elementary School.

After carefully reviewing the timeline and requirements involved in opening a new NC Pre-K classroom, Surry County Schools has made the decision to delay opening the classroom until the 2027-2028 school year.

We know many families have been excited about the possibility of a Pre-K classroom at Shoals, and we truly appreciate your interest and patience throughout this process. Reopening the NC Pre-K classroom at Shoals involves several important steps, including securing funding, completing the required state licensing and approval process, and preparing the classroom to meet all program requirements. Because the license for the previous Pre-K classroom was relinquished when the site closed, the classroom is considered a new program and must complete the full state approval and licensing process before it can open. Our district has been working closely with local and state partners to move through those steps as quickly as possible.

Ultimately, we believe allowing additional time to complete the necessary licensing and approval process, finalize funding, recruit and prepare qualified staff, and ensure the classroom is fully ready for students will provide the best opportunity to open the program successfully and provide families with timely, clear information as plans move forward.
