On Monday, April 14, 2025, Lukas White, a Surry Early College High School of Design student,
received the North Carolina Community College System Academic Excellence Award. Every
year, each of the 58 community colleges in the NC Community College System selects one
student as their "The Great Within the 58" recipient! Lukas was presented this award by Dr.
David Shockley on April 14, 2025, at the Surry Community College Board of Trustees meeting.
This honor is the highest honor the Community College System bestows upon its students. The
award was created in 1998 to recognize and encourage scholarship among students at all North
Carolina community colleges. Each college selects one student to receive this award each year.
