Administrators immediately contacted law enforcement, who responded quickly and are currently investigating the incident. As a precautionary measure, the school went into lockdown. While the investigation is ongoing, I want to assure you that our top priority is the safety and well-being of all our students and staff, and we are taking all necessary precautions to ensure everyone's safety. Law enforcement is in the process of clearing the building, moving from room to room. At this time, we ask that individuals do not report to campus. Students and staff will return to their normal schedule once all classrooms are cleared.

1,000 and Counting: Kenzie Hooker Reaches Career Milestone
Surry Central's Kenzie Hooker has reached an impressive milestone in her career as a Golden Eagle, recording over 1,000 career assists. For a setter, every assist represents an opportunity created for a teammate to score. Reaching the 1,000 assist mark is an achievement reserved for elite setters and reflects Hooker's consistency, leadership, and dedication on the court. Coach Smith commented "The 2026 Eagles' volleyball season continues to steadily climb towards one of discipline and victory. We continue to make adjustments to focus on our execution while maintaining a culture of accountability, gratitude, servanthood, and unity." Hooker's achievement is a testament to the work behind every point and the teammates who finish each play. With plenty of volleyball still to play, the Eagles look to keep building, competing, and raising the standard with every match.

#SCSCTE | Ms. Templeton's SCHS and SECHS interns have been working hard during the first days of school to strengthen their technical and employability skills as they prepare to begin at their individual job sites this week.
Through collaborative orientation activities, students have learned more about workplace expectations, professionalism, communication, teamwork, and the importance of making a positive first impression. They are preparing not just to show up at a workplace, but to step in with confidence and represent themselves and their schools with pride.
The Traditional Internship Program at Surry Central High School and Surry Early College High School is a rigorous process that connects classroom learning to a semester-long work-based learning experience. Juniors and Seniors have the opportunity to explore career interests of their choice, gain valuable real-world experience, and ultimately make more informed decisions about the next steps in their college and career pathways. Hands-on work experience simply can’t be beat!
A huge THANK YOU to our local businesses and community partners for their willingness to partner with Ms. Templeton to create these opportunities and guide our students through meaningful workplace experiences. #SCSUpdates | Good afternoon, Surry County Schools families. Surry County Schools wants to make you aware of a recent cybersecurity incident involving Canvas, the learning management system used by school districts and organizations across the country.
Canvas has informed districts that a criminal threat actor gained unauthorized access to certain account-related data associated with some organizations using the platform. At this time, Canvas has indicated there is no evidence that passwords, dates of birth, Social Security numbers, financial information, or government identification numbers were involved.
Canvas reports that the unauthorized access was identified and removed, the vulnerability has been addressed, and additional security protections have been implemented. The company is continuing to work with outside forensic experts, federal law enforcement, and cybersecurity agencies as the investigation continues.
At this time, we do not have an estimated timeline for when Canvas access will be restored. Our staff is working closely with state officials, Canvas, and technology partners to monitor the situation and determine any potential impact to Surry County Schools.
Schools and teachers will communicate alternative methods for assignments and classroom communication as needed while Canvas access remains unavailable.
We understand the importance of protecting student and staff information and will continue to provide updates as more verified information becomes available. Thank you for your patience and support.

According to the National Weather Service, the highest and most widespread threat will be strong, damaging winds, with the potential for wind gusts between 60 and 70 miles per hour in our region. Winds are expected to begin increasing around 9:00 a.m., with the strongest conditions developing late morning and around midday, and continuing into the afternoon.
Because these wind speeds exceed what we consider safe for operating school buses, we do not feel comfortable having buses on the road during these conditions.
Again, Surry County Schools will be closed for students tomorrow, with an optional teacher workday for staff.
