Presidents' Day is a federal holiday celebrated on the third Monday in February; Presidents' Day 2026 will occur on February 16. Originally established in 1885 in recognition of President George Washington, the holiday became popularly known as Presidents' Day after it was moved as part of 1971’s Uniform Monday Holiday Act, an attempt to create more three-day weekends for the nation’s workers. While several states still have individual holidays honoring the birthdays of Washington, Abraham Lincoln and other figures, Presidents' Day is now popularly viewed as a day to celebrate all U.S. presidents, past and present.

Today, we proudly recognize and thank Officer Lance Richardson for his dedication, protection, and support of our school community. We are grateful for the positive relationships he builds with our students and staff each day and for always keeping safety a top priority.
Thank you,
Officer Richardson, for all you do!

Episode 18 of Beyond the Bell with Surry County Schools is LIVE! 🎙️
In this episode, we sit down with Weatherly Reeves, a North Surry High School alum whose path from student intern to Marketing & Talent Manager with the Surry County Economic Development Partnership reflects the power of creativity and community connection.
Weatherly shares how her experiences in design, entrepreneurship, and storytelling led her back home to Surry County, and how she’s now helping elevate opportunities for others while pursuing her own creative passions as an author/ illustrator and business owner.
Her story is a reminder that students' experiences today can shape the communities they serve tomorrow!

Yesterday SAVE Promise students from Mrs.Priddy's 4th Grade class taught our students and staff the importance of Active Listening Skills. Active Listening is our leadership trait of the month and our students and staff will be working hard to make sure that they are using their whole body to listen and understand what others are trying to say. These students also shared that SAVE Promise will be hosting a food drive for the month of February along with a kindness challenge for "Random Acts of Kindness". Thank you SAVE Promise for your leadership!

During the month of January, our staff members work hard leading our students and each other with leadership skills. This month, Haley Newman was selected as the staff member who goes above and beyond for her peers and students by showing outstanding communication skills. Peers say, "Haley communicates effectively with her students. She not only uses verbal cues but also nonverbal. She communicates through positive body language too. She is seen smiling, making eye contact with her students as well as having open arms with not only her current students but former students as well."

During the month of January, our students have worked hard to be a good example of communication skills. The students below worked on expressing ideas clearly and effectively. This includes giving and receiving feedback. We are so proud of these Gators for being outstanding leaders in our school and community!
