Weekly Message from Mrs. Hazelwood:
3/24/24
Good evening, tiger families! This is Mrs. Hazelwood calling with tiger news! On Monday and Tuesday we will have kindergarten screening appointments for our rising kindergarten students. Our running club will meet after school on Monday and gardening club will meet after school on Tuesday. Please send a note if your child plans to stay. Tuesday night is our 2nd and 3rd grade PTO Program @ 6:00. Come out and hear beautiful singing from our students! 2nd grade students will have a different lunch schedule on this day. Kindergarten will have a field trip on Wednesday. Please return your child’s permission form if they plan to attend. Our ROAR Celebration and PTO Egg hunt will be on Thursday. Please remind your child to bring a basket to collect eggs. Our PTO is in need of candy for this event. We appreciate any donations of individually wrapped candy for this event. Report cards go home on Thursday. Please sit down with your child and set goals for the last quarter of school. Talk about how they plan to lead self and achieve those goals. Finally, there is no school March 29th through April 1st due to Easter break. Enjoy this long weekend with your family! Have a wonderful week! Good night!
DES was asked to provide artwork to hang in the Surry County Courthouse. The goal was to help create a more kid-friendly, welcoming environment, particularly for those attending juvenile court. The students were greeted by Judge William Southern IIII and presented a letter of appreciation from him for their hard work. We are appreciative of him and everyone at the Courthouse for their time! Great work, tigers, and what a wonderful opportunity! 🤩

Good evening, tiger families! This is Mrs. Hazelwood calling with tiger news! This week is Read Across America Week! We will have daily activities planned to encourage reading with students! Chorus will meet after school on Monday, Book Battle on Tuesday, and art club on Wednesday. Please send a note if your child plans to stay. Our PTO will meet at 6:00 at Dobson Elementary on Tuesday night. We invite any parent that is able to join us. Friday will be our Book Character parade. Encourage your child to dress up as their favorite book character. Looking ahead, there is no school March 2nd-10th due to spring break. Have a wonderful week! Good night!

2/23/24- American Heart Challenge
Good evening, Dobson family. This is Mrs. Hazelwood calling with a very important reminder regarding our school’s Kids Heart Challenge program. While this program’s primary purpose is to raise much needed funds for the American Heart Association and it’s many deserving families in need, there is also a way for our school to benefit. If 50% of our students simply register online, our school receives a gift certificate from US GAMES to purchase much needed PE equipment. Please consider taking a few minutes to register your child. Reaching this goal would greatly benefit our school and help provide additional resources for our PE department. The program ends Tuesday, February 27, so please take action soon. Thank you and have a good night.
A test of the Surry County Schools Notification System was conducted this afternoon. If you did not receive a call or email, please alert the main office at your respective school so staff can update your contact information accordingly.
Collection envelopes with all the information you need will be sent home this week for our "Kids Heart Challenge", which raises money for the American Heart Association. Money can be raised both in person AND online!

"Hey Tiger Parents! We want to thank everyone who came out to support our Sweetheart Dance this past Friday. We were able to raise a little over $1000! Thanks to the fundraisers and donations we have been able to do many things publicly and behind the scenes. 🎊

All this is in addition to the playground equipment (donated in 2022), new tables for the library(fundraised for 2023), and this year supporting our specialty teachers (2024). We are thankful to have the parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles, and support of local businesses to be able to make an impact on the students and staff at DES. If you would like to learn more about the PTO, our next meeting will be February 27th at 6:00 pm. Come join us! 🐾
Here’s what you need to know about the Book Fair, which will take place from February 19th – February 22nd. Students will have the opportunity to shop during the school day. 📚
Parents can come shop with their child at the following dates and times:
Monday, February 19th from 3:00 p.m. – 3:45 p.m.
Tuesday, February 20th from 7:30 a.m. – 8:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. – 3:45 p.m.
Wednesday, February 21st from 7:30 a.m. – 8:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. – 3:45 p.m.
Thursday, February 22nd from 7:30 a.m. – 8:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. – 3:45 p.m.
