For the month of January students and staff worked to be better communicators. This month, our staff nominated Ms. Britney Shelton to be the communication leader. Staff said, "Britney is a great communicator to students and staff. She goes the extra mile to explain things to students to make sure they understand content or general ideas. She communicates with staff to share ideas and to ensure goals are being met within the classroom. She is friendly to all and communicates her care for others not only with her words but through her actions as well."

Today, Mrs. Simpson's class and her intern Miss Antunez created edible models of the layers of skin. Students used several yummy treats to do so. Students began with a layer of marshmallows to represent the subcutaneous layer in the hypodermis. Next, students layered chocolate pudding on top to represent the dermis. Students stuck gummy worms in the dermis to represent hair. Students finally added a layer of crushed graham crackers on top to represent the epidermis. The graham crackers resembled the skin that flakes from daily activity.

Don't miss out on capturing these special memories! 😊

On Friday, Surry Early College Hosa students came to teach pre-k, kindergarten, and first-grade students about handwashing.

Last week, Officer Goins and his K9 partner, Dixie, paid a special visit to our third-grade students! Dixie, a highly trained police canine, wowed the kids with her skills and discipline while Officer Goins shared insights into the important work they do to keep our community safe. The students had the chance to ask questions, learn about teamwork between an officer and their canine, and even see Dixie demonstrate some of her abilities. It was a fun and educational experience for everyone! A big thank you to Officer Goins and Dixie for stopping by and inspiring our future leaders! 🐾🚔

#SCSUpdates | Surry County Schools will operate on a regular schedule tomorrow, Friday, January 17, with limited bus routes. We have seen great improvement in road conditions across Surry County. However, some bus turnarounds continue to be inaccessible due to snow removal piles. This means buses will not travel on dirt roads, dead-end roadways, or cul-de-sacs. Families who live on these roadways, please reference our limited bus routes list on our website to locate your child’s corner stop.
Based on the improved road conditions, there will be no community stops tomorrow.
Thank you for your patience and understanding as we work to keep students safe. We look forward to seeing everyone tomorrow!

Today our SAVE Promise Leaders held our monthly assembly to talk about our leadership trait of the month. This month our school will be focusing on communication skills. Our goal for this month is: I can share ideas clearly and effectively.
Our leaders also talked about the food drive that SAVE Promise will be hosting until February 7th! You can send any non-perishable food into the school and food will be donated to local families. There will be prizes for the top three classes!

#SCSUpdates | Here is the schedule and transportation update for Thursday, January 16, 2025. Please read carefully to ensure you have all the information you need for tomorrow.
1. Due to the lingering effects of recent inclement weather, Surry County Schools will operate on a 2-hour delay.
2. We will operate this 2-hour delay with limited bus routes. Buses will not travel down dirt or dead-end roadways. Families who live on dead-end or dirt roads, please reference our limited bus routes list on our website to locate your child’s corner stop.
3. As a further measure to ensure the safety of our students, we will be implementing our community bus stop plan. Here’s what families need to know:
- For the roads that have been deemed unsafe and impassable, your child’s school will contact you shortly with the location of your assigned community bus stop. This list can also be found on our district website.
- In the morning, designated activity buses will be stationed at specific community bus stops. These buses will serve as warm, safe waiting areas for students while they wait for their yellow school bus to arrive. Parents and guardians should plan to drop off their children at the assigned stop during the designated drop-off window. The drop-off window at all community bus stops is from 8:30a.m - 9:30 a.m. School staff and drivers will supervise students until they board their yellow school bus for transportation to school.
- In the afternoon, parents should plan to meet buses at the designated community bus stops. - The afternoon time for parents to pick up students from the designated community stops are from 3:45 p.m. - 4:30 p.m. School staff and drivers will supervise students until they are picked up from their community bus stop. Those who are picking up students in the afternoon will need photo identification to sign out their student.
- Both breakfast and lunch will be provided tomorrow.
If you plan to drive your child directly to and from school, please be aware that some secondary roads may still be icy. Allow extra travel time, drive cautiously, and take the safest route available to ensure your safety.
Thank you for your understanding and cooperation as we prioritize the safety of our students and staff. This plan is for tomorrow, January 16, 2025. Our Inclement Weather Team will monitor highly impacted roads, temperatures, and melt to determine transportation plans for Friday, January 17. Transportation plans for Friday will be communicated out Thursday evening.
Stay safe, and we look forward to seeing your children tomorrow. Have a great evening!

#SCSUpdates | Due to continued concerns over secondary roads and anticipated icy conditions across the county, Surry County Schools will transition to a Remote Learning Day tomorrow, Wednesday, January 15, for students and staff. Elementary students should complete work in their remote learning packets, and middle and high school students should access their assignments on Canvas. Thank you, and please stay safe!

Due to the remote day today, we will collect donations for our Book-a-thon tomorrow, January 15th. (If we are unable to attend school tomorrow, we will collect money on Thursday.) All money should be turned to Mrs. Edwards. Thank you for your support of this effort to raise funds for our school.
