#SCSUpdates | Good afternoon, Surry County Schools families. Surry County Schools wants to make you aware of a recent cybersecurity incident involving Canvas, the learning management system used by school districts and organizations across the country.
Canvas has informed districts that a criminal threat actor gained unauthorized access to certain account-related data associated with some organizations using the platform. At this time, Canvas has indicated there is no evidence that passwords, dates of birth, Social Security numbers, financial information, or government identification numbers were involved.
Canvas reports that the unauthorized access was identified and removed, the vulnerability has been addressed, and additional security protections have been implemented. The company is continuing to work with outside forensic experts, federal law enforcement, and cybersecurity agencies as the investigation continues.
At this time, we do not have an estimated timeline for when Canvas access will be restored. Our staff is working closely with state officials, Canvas, and technology partners to monitor the situation and determine any potential impact to Surry County Schools.
Schools and teachers will communicate alternative methods for assignments and classroom communication as needed while Canvas access remains unavailable.
We understand the importance of protecting student and staff information and will continue to provide updates as more verified information becomes available. Thank you for your patience and support.

We also want to thank Mrs. Queen and Mrs. Waters for providing dessert from Lorene’s for everyone to enjoy! We truly appreciate all of the kindness, generosity, and support shown to our teachers and staff this week!

Thank you to all of our students’ parents for the delicious snacks in the lounge—we truly appreciate your kindness and support!

Deaf Awareness Week 2026 is a significant time dedicated to increasing public understanding of Deaf culture, history, and the challenges faced by the Deaf community. This week encourages individuals and organizations to participate in activities that promote better communication and greater inclusivity.
What is Deaf Awareness Week?
Deaf Awareness Week is an annual event aimed at raising awareness about the Deaf community, their culture, and the specific communication needs of Deaf and hard of hearing individuals. It is a time to celebrate the contributions of the Deaf community and to promote the rights of Deaf people worldwide.

SAVE stands for Students Against Violence Everywhere, and over the past four years, these clubs have played an important role in promoting kindness, school safety, and positive school culture across our district.
This year, we are excited to honor Rockford Elementary School and their SAVE Promise Club for their outstanding efforts to deter bullying and create a culture of kindness for all students.
Throughout the year, Rockford’s SAVE students have led impactful initiatives including spirit weeks for Start with Hello, Say Something, Child Abuse Prevention, Youth Mental Health Day, and the Kindness Challenge. They also organize monthly school-wide assemblies to teach leadership traits in creative and engaging ways—through books, skits, and interactive activities.
Their work goes beyond the classroom. From identifying students who may need a friend at recess, to creating and donating encouraging items to community members, their compassion and leadership truly make a difference. They are even planning a “Mindful Monday” event to support students before EOG testing with activities like yoga, meditation, and affirmation stations.
We are incredibly proud of their continued commitment to inclusion, kindness, and service. 💙
Congratulations to:
• Mrs. Kelly Waters, Principal
• Mrs. Grayce Goins-Simmons, Club Sponsor
And a special thank you to Accurate Insurance and Mr. Jeff Fitzgerald for sponsoring this award!
